The Mad Square:Modernity in German Art 1910-37

The Mad Square:Modernity in German art 1910-37 is a great exhibition for design students as it explores a range of design movements including the Expressionism, Dada, Constructivism, Bauhaus and New Objectivity.

The Bauhaus 1919-33 is widely considered the most important school of art and design of the 20th Century, and for that reason alone, it would be worthwhile taking your students along to view the many examples of pieces of work in this exhibition. The Metropolis poster would be an interesting poster to analyse in terms of the design elements and principles used. The form and function of the furniture, and the compositions of the photographic pieces, would all have a place for discussion in the VCD classroom. The range of work demonstrates the fascinating and complex ways which artists and designers reacted to the social, political and tehnological changes.
